Shopping : |
Shopping in Delhi can be a great experience as long as you can avoid the touts and learn some haggling tricks.
The city being very spread out we have tried to breakdown by areas to bring to you a shopping experience that you can savour.
Connaught Place or CP Area:
Perhaps one place in New Delhi where all tourist come to shop for souvenirs, knick-knacks, etc. is Connaught Place, or CP in short, as it is popularly called locally.. The area around Janpath is famous for |

its Indian crafts, junk jewelry, etc. The proximity to various places of interest allows travelers to indulge in shopping in this area. The inner circle of CP has all the bigger branded shops and restaurants. It’s a huge market that can be easily done on foot and provides the old world charm with most of the buildings over 100 years old. To get to the emporiums look for the Hanuman Mandir Road. There are lots of state emporiums right across the Hanuman Mandir.
Parts of the Connaught Place with area code 110001, also hosts some of the prime residential area. Connaught Place is also popular with people seeking Hotels. While on one hand, some of the big five star hotels are in the area, on the other hand, the area adjoining Connaught Place, namely Paharganj, is also popular with the backpackers and budget hotel seekers.
GK-I M block & N-block Market:
Located in posh South Delhi locality of Greater Kailash I, the M-block market is a busy market and favorite with young trendy and affluent locals.
It’s a great place to shop for brands (Indian and foreign), handbags, shoes,
clothes, eye-wear, etc. The deals are great and so is the variety. Don’t let the location fool you, it is still not as expensive when compared to western prices for comparative products. A must visit to give you a good insight into the city. The ‘Prince Paan’ shop is a cigarette and Paan (local delicacy with cinnamon, jelly and other condiments wrapped in a leaf) shop, famous for its Paan and ‘Nimbu Soda (Fresh Lime Soda).
The N-block market carries some antique shops, Fab India (the renowned Indian clothes stores for Kurtas and Pyjamas and other ethnic house and dream materials) and some other local shops.
iii). Khan Market
Khan Market is famous for its various lamps stores, imported food shops and its proximity to Connaught Place Area. There are also lots of restuarants in the area.
Sunder Nagar Market
Sunder Nagar Market has a good number of shops for jewelry and artifacts. With a large number of antique shops, this place is a much better place than Janpath in terms of variety and quality. Unlike Janpath, here you will not need to search through thousands of pieces to find the one you treasure. Sunder Nagar Market is located not very far from Connaught Place Area and can come on your way while hitting South Delhi from India Gate area.
Lajpat Nagar Market
Want to see a wholesale market for dress materials, vibrant colors of Indian dresses, shoes, bags, houseware? Lajpat Nagar is a busy place to say the least but will give you a good experience of all that average Indians shop for. Even though located in South Delhi this place is not upscale like GK-I or South Extension Market but nevertheless worth visiting to give you an insight into the disparity in shopping styles of the society. If you find something consider that a bonus. One can easily spend 3-4 hours here.
South Extension Part I & II:
‘South Ex’ as it’s commonly called is a great place to shop for clothes, bags & shoes. Quality brands, huge variety, and ongoing discounts at renowned shops all this makes up South Ex to be a great shopping place. While in South Ex try the famous Indian snack restaurant ‘Bengali Sweets’.
