than a facade. The building was dedicated to Lord Krishna and the tiered structure is supported to resemble Lord Krishna’s crown. You can get to the top of the ‘Hawa Mahal and enjoy a great view of the city .Inside you will find a small museum of handicrafts and archeological finds. The entry is open every day from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm, Fridays are closed.

City Palace :
Located in the heart of the old city, this giant complex of royal residence is a mix of Mughal and Rajasthani architecture.
The complex holds numbers of chambers that were once used by the king, queen and the guests at the royal family. The Palace also holds a museum that carries the collection of Royal costumes including the one of that of Sawai Madho Singh 1st, whose stature as a king was also met by his physical
appearance. The king stood tall at over 6 and a half feet and supposedly weighed 250 kgs (or over 500 pounds). The inside of the Palace has some beautiful work of art with hand painted ceilings and use of some beautiful colors.
The palace also holds two large silver wins that are listed in the Gunnies Book of Records as the world’s largest silver objects. It is said that when the king Sawai Madho Singh 2nd visited London, he took these two jars .each carrying 9,000 liters of holy Ganges water, to avoid using foreign water.

Jantar Mantar :
Right next to the city Palace is the observatory or ‘Jantar Mantar’. The King’s interest in astronomy was evident by the fact that he sent his scholars abroad to study foreign observatories before constructing the largest one in Jaipur.
Even though Jantar Mantar seems to be just a place with haphazardly placed structures, these are instruments constructed to measure the positions of stars and planets. A guide to lead you through the place and provide you with details will make your visit a much more pleasant experience.
Jantar Mantar is open on all days from 9.00 am in the morning till 4.30 pm.

Amer Fort :
Amer Fort is located about 10 Kms from Jaipur, on Delhi- Jaipur highway.
Amer, the place used to be the capital of Kachhwaha dynasty before moving to Jaipur. The Fort, which is also known as Amber Fort was built by Raja Man Singh with later editions done by Sawai Jai Singh.
The Fort is a 10 minute climb that can be easily done by car or one can take an elephant ride up to the gate of the Fort.
The Kachhwahas dynasty ruled Amer for more than seven centuries and the imposing fort symbolizes a stamp of their kingdom’s grandeur .It is believed that the Fort took two centuries to build , rising above the water of Maota lake , the Fort complex exhibits a great mix of Mughal and Rajasthani architecture.

At the start of the complex lies a tribute to the Kachhwahas clan goddess, in form of Shila Devi Temple. On further entry are two buildings – ‘Diwan-e-Aam’ (Public Audience Hall) and “Ganesh Pol”. These buildings further lead to the residential palaces placed around the Mughal- style gardens.

Amer Fort’s main attraction however is the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ (the mirrored room) and the splendid views of the town and the gardens around Maota Lake, particularly the ‘Kesar Kyari Bagh’, where saffron used to be grown once upon a time.

Nahargarh Fort:
Built in 1734 and also commonly known as ‘Tiger Fort’, it lies 6 km north-west of City Palace and provides some great views of Jaipur.
Built initially on the outskirts of the city as a line of defense, the Fort requires a climb of 2 Kms to fully enjoy the breath taking views of the city.

More recently the much popular Hindi blockbuster movie ‘Rang De Basanti’ was shot here .To get to the picturesque locales shot in the movie take a left turn as you enter the Fort.
