Introduction : |
A small town, 155 Kms south – west of Jaipur, Pushkar is famous for its temples, its bohemian atmosphere, and its world renowned annual camel fair.
Pushkar has a special mention and place in Hindu mythology. Pushkar is the only place in the world where Lord Brahma, the creator of the Universe (as by Hindu Mythology) is still |

|
worshipped. Legend has it that Lord Brahma was looking to hold a Yagna (a ritual with prayers offered around a bon-fire) when the lotus he was holding in his hands fell and landed at Pushkar (and hence the name ‘Pushkar’ meaning a lake filled with Lotus flowers). He decided to hold his Yagna there, however as
his wife failed to join him, he married another local women to partake in the proceedings. When his first wife Savitri found out about Brahma marrying Gaytri, she cursed him saying that Pushkar would be the only place he would be worshiped in.
Today this small town nestled in Aravalli Valley is divided into ‘Badi Basti’ and ‘Chhoti Basti’, with the latter being older. Although most of its construction is not older than 18th century, the town still holds its place in the history due to its religious importance.
